Dr. Steven Burrell

Dr. Steven C. Burrell is an innovative leader, executive, author, strategist, and futurist. Dr. Burrell’s extensive career in higher education IT spans four decades. Over his career, he has held roles as Vice President and Chief Information Officer (CIO) at five different institutions, including public doctoral research universities and community colleges.  In 2020, EdTech magazine recognized him as one of the top 30 higher education IT influencers, highlighting his significant influence and leadership over digital transformation, cultural change, and the application of technology to enhance student success and advance institutional goals.

Dr. Burrell is the author of The Smart Campus Manifesto: Transforming People, Technology, and Process for the AI-Enabled Sustainable Smart Campus. In this seminal work, he defines the "sentient campus"—an antifragile living ecosystem capable of sensing, learning, and responding through the convergence of Information Technology (IT) and Operational Technology (OT).  A prolific writer and speaker, Dr. Burrell has consistently contributed to the body of knowledge in higher education technology. His thought leadership has been featured in major industry publications and research frameworks and is a frequent speaker at conferences and gatherings.
